Ty Martin joined the board of Harlem Advocates for Seniors (HAS) after becoming aware that there was no representation of the community when several of the Senior Centers were closed in Harlem.
Background:
Mr. Martin has worked as the SAGE (Services & Advocacy for LGBT Elders) Harlem Community Outreach Manager, Program Manager and SAGE Harlem outreach worker since the start of his employment in March 2008.Ā He is the SAGE Center Harlem Community Liaison,Ā and is a member of the Schomburg Corporation Board of Trustees.
Mr. Martin is a decorated veteran of the United States Armed Forces.Ā His tenure in the U.S. Navy garnered him a National Defense Service Medal, two (2) Vietnam Service Medals; a Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal and, the Meritorious Unit Commendation Ribbon before being honorably discharged in 1971. He later served in the U.S. Army and was honorably discharged 1992.
He appeared in the SAGE ad campaign which heralded āthereās no expiration date on a full and active life.ā These ads appeared in print media and the New York City public transportation system. Mr. Martin has been interviewed by the New York Daily News, āIsolation, an age-old issue for gay seniorsā, Time-Out Magazine, āMeet the Marchersā, NEXT Magazine, āFaces of Changeā, and several public ads. His film credits include the role of Eugene in “You are Not Alone”, a DBGM documentary.Ā He is one of three seniors featured in the TRIBECA film Institute film āBefore You know itā.
Mr. Martin is a native of Harlem who is actively involved with improving the quality of life for older adults in the Harlem community.Ā He loves family and friends and collects African art and artifacts, enjoys meditation, traveling outside America, and helping other people.
